چکیده

In current video coding standards, the encoder exploits temporal redundancies within the video sequence by performing blockbased motion compensated prediction. However, the motion estimation is only performed at the encoder, and the motion vectors have to be coded explicitly into the bit stream. Recent research has shown that the compression efficiency can be improved by also estimating the motion at the decoder. This paper gives a detailed description of a decoder-side motion estimation architecture which assumes temporal constant motion and compares the proposed motion compensation algorithm with an alternative interpolation method. The overall rate reduction for this approach is almost 8% compared to H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10 (AVC). Furthermore, an extensive comparison with the assumption of spatial constant motion, as used in decoder-side motion vector derivation, is given. A new combined approach of both algorithms is proposed that leads to 13% bit rate reduction on average.

Side-Information Generation for Temporally and Spatially Scalable Wyner-Ziv Codecs

The distributed video coding paradigm enables video codecs to operate with reversed complexity, in which the complexity is shifted from the encoder toward the decoder. Its performance is heavily dependent on the quality of the side information generated by motio estimation at the decoder. We compare the rate-distortion performance of different side-information estimators, for both temporally an...

TR - 08 - 20 - 2009 - CS - MU Motion Refinement Based Progressive Side - Information Estimation for Wyner - Ziv Video Coding

The accuracy of motion estimation (ME) plays an important role in improving the coding efficiency of Wyner-Ziv video coding (WZVC). Most existing WZVC schemes perform ME at the decoder side. The unavailability of the current frame at the decoder side usually limits the accuracy of ME, which results in the degradation of the side information (SI) quality, as well as the coding efficiency of WZVC...

Embedding a Block-based Intra Mode in Frame-based Pixel Domain Wyner-Ziv Video Coding

Distributed source coding principles have been recently applied to video coding in order to achieve a flexible distribution of the complexity burden between the encoder and the decoder. In this paper we elaborate on a pixel based WynerZiv video codec that shifts all the complexity of the motion estimation phase to the decoder, thus achieving light encoding. We observe that the correlation noise...

Wyner-Ziv Video Coding with Multi-resolution Motion Refinement: Theoretical Analysis and Practical Significance

The accuracy of motion estimation (ME) plays an important role in improving the coding efficiency of Wyner-Ziv video coding (WZVC). Most existing WZVC schemes perform ME at the decoder. The unavailability of the current frame on the decoder side usually impairs the accuracy of ME, which also causes the degradation of coding efficiency of WZVC. To improve the accuracy of ME, some works in the li...

Side information generation in Wyner-Ziv decoder

Wyner-Ziv (WZ) encoder is a low -complexity encoder and can be made to achieve compression comparable to traditional high complexity encoders but at the expense of a high-complexity decoder. The high complexity of the decoder is mainly attributed to the generation of side information which involves motion estimation. In this paper sub-pixel motion estimation and intra-prediction based on H.264 ...
